Standard #9: Professional Learning and Ethical Practice

The teacher engages in ongoing professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner.

"Mrs. Allouch spends time before and after school on developing her curriculum and learning about best practices. For example, she uses time outside of the class to develop weekly syllabi that help to drive her daily lesson plans. She reviews her plans daily to determine if changes need to be made to increase the students’ understanding of the material. She also is a member of both the National Science Teachers Association and the Metropolitan Detroit Science Teachers Association. She reads the professional journals from these organizations to learn more about best practices associated with science teaching."~~D. Hoehn-CT

"Nina Allouch is a member of a professional science teachers association and uses their resources to keep up-to-date on best practices." ~~R. Sitron-S.T. Supervior

Description:

The mission of articulating what type of students I have in my classroom or the types of teachers I am helps me strengthen my awareness of many of my blind spots. These blind spots can be eliminated through reflecting on my teaching style and keeping journals for future reference.  These reflections will also develop better understandings of my strengths as well as shed light on the areas that requires improvement toward continual learning and growth. During my student teaching experience, I upheld a journal as a means of  self- evaluation (Reflective Journal) .In addition, after teaching each lesson, I reflect upon my teaching and how the  strategies used to teach this lesson ( "Fireworks" Lesson Plan) helped students  construct  their understanding  effectively. I always  try to bridge any detected learning gaps by providing differentitaed instructions  and adaptations for the students with challenges( Case Study). In additon to self- reflection, in November 8, 2014 , I attended the "DACTM/MDSTA Fall Conference" in Woodhaven high School as a pre-service teacher and reflect on it .   I aslo attended a professsional development in the DCMST High School  where I student taught. Both training  provided unique learning opportunities in sessions on  project- based learning, Inquiry- based learning ,TI-Nspire use in the chemistry classrooms, ipad  science apps. I employed both PD  valuable  resources in my classroom and let the students benefit from up-to-date  best  chemistry practices. In addition, as  a mean of professional disposition, I attended the PTC conferences , the DCMST open house , and the after school events for the school.

"Nina attended the DCMST open house, and is planning to attend the PTC (Parent Teacher conference) next week. She  gets in touch with the parents through emails with the CT. She sent home a newsletter regarding the PTC. They use a district wide website-iLEARN- for students and their parents as a mean of resources, syllabus, assignments, and reminders for upcoming events. She also calls parents in a regular daily basis to make them aware of their students; growth. They also use Student Connect to post the students grades."~~R. Sitron- S.T. Supervisor

 Reflection:

Effective teachers should develop a “self-evaluation system” to continually reflect on their teaching practices. I believe that the critical component of teaching is the ability to reflect on   teaching experiences in   order to construct a better understanding of my past experiences and build on it and seek improvement as well as training to grow and meet the needs of ALL students. Through analyzing the strategies used after teaching each lesson, teachers can check if the students grasped the lesson objectives and make any adaptations to bridge any detected gaps. Some of the aspects that I will be focusing on in my future teaching career are to set high expectations for my students, time management, employing inquiry-based activities in my classroom.

In addition to self-reflection, showing professional disposition entails being dedicated to the success of my classroom as well as the school community where I work.  This can be fulfilled by contributing in after school events and actively involving in continual learning
