"Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it." ~~Marian Wright Edelman

Committed to Diversity

Diversity is not about how we differ. Diversity is about embracing one another's uniqueness(Ola Joseph).Educators must value diversity and model this stance to their students. When we promote diversity, we respect the fact that the difference of our students is a good thing.  As our classroom is a small model of the world, teacher should always observe the community around the school, build upon their assists, understand their challenges, and reflect upon all elements that can impact the conductive learning environment. Being able to always seek better understanding of my classroom community will greatly impact my teaching. I would always make myself visible to parents at drop off and pick up time and take time to have quick conversations with them in order to build confidence and relationships. I will make time to participate in community events and social gathering as a gesture of caring and being a part of the community. If my students feel the sense of belonging to the “classroom community”, they then will feel comfortable, respected, willing to learn, and their chances of success will highly increase.

At the beginning of the schools year, to better understand the culture diversity in my classroom, I encourage the students to work on a PROJECT (PowerPoint, Prezi, Trifold board, etc.) illustrating their cultures which include , value of education in their culture, relations between family bonds, special food, ties of country of origin. This will help me to better understand their culture, their likes and dislikes, what they value, and focusing on all the students when addressing an issue in the classroom.

We also can schedule a day during the year to celebrate culture diversity where students can dress their traditional custom, bring their country food, teach each other’s about their country of origin.

In addition, on the first day of each school year , my students and I created a " CHAIN OF STRENGHTS" where each one of us write down on colorful papers his/her four strenghts traits. In a circular path, each one  unfold his/ her strenghts traits. we then connect all the strenghts together in order to show " the classroom's community CHAIN OF STRENGHTS"

Fostering DIVERISTY in my classroom can be displayed in many practices where the students feel respected and valued:

  • Meeting the needs of various types of learners by differentiated instructions.

  • Value the students’ cultural differences, norms, and beliefs when teaching a concept.

  • Respect family socioeconomic status, background, culture, and level of education.

  •  Consider the ESL families and ensure to follow up with them of their kid growth either with their language or with the presence of another teacher who speaks their language.

  • Remind them that it is not always a good thing to be  ALIKE rather the uniqueness of each one of them is an ASSET to the classroom

  • Encourage the students to work in teams or groups I order to benefit from each other strengths and weaknesses.

  • Bring successful guest speakers that are related to one culture from time to time because students are in need of role models.

  • Enforce a "zero tolerance" bullying plan in my classroom for anything that can disrespect, hurt, or not value diversity.

In my teaching profession, I will  make sure to promote diversity in my classroom which in turn can  build a classroom environment that is safe,  respectful, and “Conductive to learning of each individual student”. I will also assist them to meet their ultimate potential by constructing their  own knowledge based on relevant, real life activities, practice many social skills, and sharpen critical-thinking skills in order to unlock ALL  students’ potentials.

Evidence of  incorporating appreciation of diversity into your teaching:

Lesson plans offer an "adaptation/accommodation" portion. In this section, the teacher should articulate how he/ she can meet diverse students with different ability and strengths.

Accomodations/Adaptations:

In my classroom, I build my bulletin board with students’ input where they come up with “CHEMISTRY INQUIRY- BASED QUESTIONS” to help students    get familiarized with the chemistry concepts.

Migrating to the United States enriched  my understanding of diversity where many culture coexists and live in harmony.I have learned that despite of  one's color, religion, and ethnic background, all of us share universal values. In my  in my future classroom, I will promote diversity which will lead to  create a "healthy" learning atmosphere   that boost students ‘interest to discover the world around them and to reveal students’ potentials.
