Standard 06: Assessment

The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher's and learner's decision making.

"Nina uses :Formative Assessment: Independent class work, Group work, exit ticket, bell work  In addition, she uses Summative Assessment: Graded assignments, pop quizzes, quizzes, unit tests, Lab reports. The school uses the cumulative grading system where teachers grades are by points so each assignment, test, quiz, lab report weigh an amount of points that accumulate throughout the semester. Feedback -- Graded assignments, quizzes, unit tests, group work assessment, classroom assignments, and lab reports."~~R.Sitron- S.T.Supervisor

"Mrs. Allouch uses both formative and summative assessments These assessments include pre-tests and post-tests,  oral quizzes, laboratory reports, real-life application questions, educational games and project-based learning. She consistently checks formative assessments to ensure that the students are on task and are doing their work correctly."~~D. Hoehn-CT

 Description:

Assessment should provide the students the opportunities to succeed and display improvement. Assessment tools can be "hands on" activities(The Flame Test Lab),  a research topic presented in a poster board like the "Teeth Decay PROJECT", Powerpoint presentation( the acids/ bases ntro lesson summative Assessemnt),  formative assessment (acids/ bases interactive activity) and more.In my classroom, the prevailing learning approach is " Learning by Doing" which the research shoed that it produces the best academic performance  outcomes. With the inquiry- based approach employed in the DCMST High school, students are always actively enagged in their learnng, on task, uphold the role of scientist in a safe, warm, productiev environment which lead to higher order thinking skills.

 Reflection:

Assessment is an integral portion of instruction as it verifies if the objectives of the lesson being learned are met. Assessment tools provide us as educators a big picture of students’ growth, strengths & weaknesses, and the various instructional needs of students with wide range of abilities. Assessment usually answers the following questions: Did the students acquire the concept being taught? Is there any other ways to teach the subject better, thus fostering better learning? Which differentiated approach will work better with diverse learners?

Today's students must not only grasp the basic scientific literacy but also the skills to face the twenty century and be productive citizens. They should uphold the skills and knowledge to think critically, analyze, make real- life connections, and formulate inferences. Teachers need to have an active role in taking the decisions regarding the drive for assessment and the subject that is being assessed because if teachers “teach to the test”,the students will not acquire the higher order thinking skills as well as decision making skills which he/she will need them in this changing world.
