Effective Innovative Urban Educator

"Not only is Mrs. Allouch very knowledgeable in chemistry but she also uses a wide range of best practices for teaching this topic. She uses examples that help students visualize concepts that may be difficult for students to understand. For example, when she was teaching the students about the location of electrons in the atom's energy levels (quantum chemistry), she compared the "electron's address" to their own personal home addresses"~~Diana Hoehn-CT

EFFECTIVE INNOVATIVE URBAN EDUCATOR :

I believe that every child is"UNIQUE" with distinctive abilities and various learning styles. My role as educator is to provide children with many tools to let them construct their own knowledge. Furthermore, I will always make sure that my lesson plans meet the needs for each and every student regardless of their diverse learning styles. I will always ensure that the lessons’ learned is relevant to the students’’ life and interests. In order to promote active learning, many instructional strategies can be utilized in my classroom. Scientific digital games , demo’s, diagrams, laminated pictures ,power point presentations, charts,  movies, timelines, mnemonics., graphic organizers, mind maps, and smart board will all assist the visual learners to grasp the concept easily.

. A good example of demo will be: A demo of “magic writing” created through the thermal decomposition of nitrates. A message is written on filter paper with a solution of sodium nitrate and is then dried. Applying a glowing taper to the start of the message makes the treated paper shoulder, and the message is revealed as the glow spreads its way through the treated paper only. For best effect use joined-up writing: a useful demonstration of the fire triangle: fuel, heat and oxygen, or for revising the equations for the decomposition of nitrates”.

. Visual & Kinesthetic  learners  can benefit a lot from creating models of molecules with different colors of clays and tooth picks to understand the concept of “chemical bonding”.

. Auditory learners needs can be convened by showing them many valuable videos for chemistry classroom like:

Animations of strong and weak acids with audio:http://www.mhhe.com/physsci/chemistry/essentialchemistry/flash/acid13.swf

Applying effective strategies in my classroom is essential to meet the numerous needs of each and every “unique” students. Technology can have the ultimate influence on differentiated instruction for diverse students with various needs because technology nowadays is their “language”.Some of these technological tools are:

.  Interactive activity and games: http://www.quia.com/jg/347025.html:  for mastering the Acids/ bases/ ph Concepts

       .  Video clips& simulation: http://www.sciencegeek.net/

Evidence of  innovative approach or strategy to motivate and/or increase student learning:

  •  The use of TECHNOLOGY to facilate students' learning: iLEARN (a Dearborn Public Schools teacher website) .

  •  Assessment should provide the students the opportunities to succeed and display improvement. Assessment means can be "hands on" activities in a meaningful setting. After watching the video about “History of Atoms”, students have to Watch the "Histrory of the Atom" Powerpoint & Answering the iLEARN  Graded Activity Questionsto do the iLEARN activity. Atoms were presented in a real life setting everyday applications. Assessment approaches should be altered and adapted to support diverse students.

Innovative Ways  to integrate content across curricular areas.

  •  Students' Project: Teeth Decay Group Project

In this project, students used real world materials to find out

what makes the teeth decay more the water, the listerine,

the orange juice, or baking soda". They used the EGG SHELL as

a teeth simulator. This project  integrates literacy and

mathematics .

. " SALTY EGGS" Lesson Plan click here :

By using the scientific method, students explore the concepts of sinking and floating. After performing some mathematical  operations, the      students find out the Density equation. "The Salty Eggs Lesson plan integrates  into Mathematics & Literacy.

"Nina uses a district wide website(the iLEARN) for students and their parents as a mean of resources, syllabus, assignments, and reminders for upcoming events. She also calls parents in a regular daily basis to make them aware of their students' growth. They also use Student Connect to post the students grades~~R.Sitron-S.T.Supervisor
