Standard #3: Learning Environments

The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.

"Ms. Allouch uses inquiry-learning to help students develop critical thinking skills. She has designed creative activities that are appropriate for 9th grade Honors Chemistry. For example, she did a two day lesson plan for writing chemical formulas. The first day she had the students do a "writing chemical formulas" competition. While they were involved in the competition, she made notes about the mistakes that the students made. The next day, she wrote these mistakes on the board and assigned each student to a specific question. The student had to determine why that chemical formula was incorrect and then explain it to the class"~~D. Hoehn-CT

"The students do a chemistry lab experiment. The students work in the lab with a partner. Nina speaks slowly, repeats directions, and writes the directions on the lab sheet. Students are on task and like the experiment." ~~R. Sitron- Student teacher Supervisor

Description:

In order to effectively shape our next generation, we should prompt our students to self-explore, encourage the level of student involvement, and guide them to assume the role of scientist. For this reason,  In this lesson,  the students were assuming the role of scientists by the “Learning by Doing” experiment- reaction in a bag. Students were  construting their own knowledge in a warm, safe, and productive  environment. Students were actively engaged in the experiment, ahowing each other how  the bag will or will not inflated . My role was only to facilitate and  guide the learning process and let the student explore answers to their  own questions.

Reflection

The learning environment I attempt to build  in my classroom  was  to link  learning opportunities that connected  student's prior knowledge to the lesson with creative, innovative methods and procedures . My students’ level of engagement enhanced by their inclusion in brainstorming and writing their lab reports.
